Nawanagar Rajmatha

Maharaja Sri Digvijay Sinhji, well known as "Jam Sahib" was critically ill at his palace in Jamnagar. He was suffering from great pain due to gall bladder stone. Added to this, he was a diabetic and his vision was blurred by glaucoma. Even though he was a man of strong will, he became helpless due to continuous illness over the past few years. Expert medical attention given to him proved futile. They suggested surgery which his frail body could not withstand. The Maharani, Gulab Kunwarba, felt it unwise to move her husband to Bombay (Mumbai) where the surgery had to be done.
Jam Sahib was anxious to meet his Guru Sri Ahorandji Maharaj, a great Yogi and a man of God. When his Guru came, he pleaded with himtoadvisethe doctors to put him to sleep. The Guru took pity on him and pulled out a picture from his bag and asked the Jam Sahib whether he knew Him. Jam Sahib was in no mood to look at any picture. The Guru said, "It is the duty of the Guru to lead his disciple to God. One who is in this picture is God in human form. Look at Him and pray to Him". Jam Sahib, finally, with a little more effort, could see the picture and said, "He is Sai Baba". The Guru was glad that his disciple could recognize Him. He advised him to pray intensely to Bhagawan Baba and that He would definitely cure him. So Jam Sahib got a little hope and started praying. At this moment Maharani told the Guru that a gentleman had come and he would not leave until he met the Jam Sahib, which she sternly refused. The Guru told her that they would meet him and enquire as he might be important to them.
The visitor was Dr. Gadhia from United Kingdom who originally hailed from Jamnagar. He submitted that he came from Puttaparthi and that he was sent by Bhagawan Baba who told him that the Maharaja was not well and the big packet of Vibhuthi He gave be handed over to him. The Maharani was surprised, but not her Guru. It looked as if he was expecting it. He exclaimed, "I told you, he might be important to us! I have already placed Baba's photo by his bedside. Now He has sent His holy Prosodl" Dr.Gadhia was profusely thanked, before he took leave of them. The Guru went inside to see Jam Sahib and explained what had happened outside, opened the Vibhuthi packet and mixed a little of it in water and asked him to drink, applying also some on his abdomen. The Maharaja who did not have sleep for the past 3 days, fell into sleep. When he woke up in the morning the pain had completely disappeared. Bhagawan Baba thus entered the life of the royal couple bringing them joy and comfort.
In six months, the Jam Sahib was completely alright except for his blurred vision. In December 1965, he went to Prasanthi Nilayam. Bhagawan created a sweet the like of which the Jam Sahib had never tasted before. The Maharani, though a diabetic, was also asked to eat it as Pras'ad. Swami asked the Jam Sahib whether he wanted his eyesight back, for which the Jam Sahib said, "I do not want my eyesight for seeing anything of this world. Though I cannot see Your form clearly, I have it imprinted in my heart. My only wish is to have my last dorshan of Lord Somnath." "I will take youtoSomnath Myself"assured Bhagawan.
Jam Sahib spent blissful days at Jamnagar till his end which came in the early hours of the morning on 2nd February 1966. Before his last breath he blessed the Maharanianddranka littleGangawatergivenbyher.
After 7 days of Jam Sahib's demise the Maharani received a letter from her niece, Nanda Kumari, the princess of Kutch, that Baba had told her, "Convey My blessings to the Maharani. I was with him in his last moments, took him to Somnath as per his wish and granted him Moksha." This completely cemented her faith in Baba who according to her was "Sakshat Easwar".
Maharani Gulab Kunwarba subsequently became the Rajmatha of Nawanagar. Her son Yuvaraj Sri Shatrushalaya Sinhji succeeded to the throne in 1966. She met Bhagawan in Bombay in May 1966, worrying about her son. Baba assured her that He was her son and that she had not to worry about anything. The Rajmatha was thus blessed by the Avatar to become the Devamatha. She offered herself completely at the altar of her Lord's mission. Baba allotted her "Devi Nivas" which was a plot of land in Brindavan Ashram for her residence in 1971. In 1972, when Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust was formed, Baba appointed Rajmatha as a member of the Trust. In 1981 when the Deemed University was founded, Bhagawan nominated her to the University Trust too. She was also on the world council of Sri Sathya Sai Organisations. Her role in the mission of Bhagawan remains matchless.
Once, Bhagawan visited Jamnagar (Amar Vilas palace) at mid-noon on 31" March 1973. Being a meticulous organiser Rajmatha had instructed her loyal Arab security guard 'Sheik' at the portico not to permit anyone with footwear into the portico in orderto maintain the sanctity of the place for the visit of her Lord. When Baba arrived, the 'Sheik' overtook all the reception committee members and told Bhagawan to remove the footwear. Baba smiled and removed the footwear and proceeded to receive the guard of honour from a contingent of homeguards who were waiting in the hot sun. Rajmatha rushed to her Lord, apologised profusely and pleaded with Him to put on the sandals, which she carried in her hands, in vain. When Baba returned to the portico he saw the Rajmatha angrily reprimanding the "Sheik" for his unpardonable sin. The guard's eyes imploring for pardon met Baba's eyes. Baba pacified her and told, "Rajmatha, it is not his mistake at all, you had not instructed him to make an exception for Me. I appreciate his loyalty and dutifulness". Tears of gratitude were seen in the eyes of the "Sheik". Further, Swami gently patted him on his back in appreciation and materialised of talisman for him. It was a piece of greenish grey stone, 1" x 1" by size with an Arabic engravingfrom Quran. The 'Sheik' looked at Rajmatha with gratitude, since without her rebuke he would not have got blessed by Baba thus.
In December 1970, Bhagawan Baba halted at the Rajmatha's "Jamnagar House" in Pune on His way to Mumbai from Bangalore. A public meeting was arranged in the compound next morning where Baba gave a discourse. The Rajmatha was overseeing preparation for lunch in the kitchen along with her daughter. They were listening to the discourse of Bhagawan through the window of the kitchen. At the end of the discourse, Swami sang a few Bhajans and the Rajmatha, closing her eyes, repeated the bhajans. Bhagawan asked the devotees to continue the bhajans, entered the kitchen by another door and was standing behind the Rajmatha listening to her singing. Rajmatha, when she opened her eyes, was surprised to see Swami standing there. After teasing and asking her to go and lead the bhajans, Swami asked for how many persons food was cooked. Rajmatha replied that it could feed about 60 persons. Bhagawan opened the lid of every item of food and blessed.
As the lunch began, Swami went on inviting more and more guests and Rajmatha was worried about the sufficiency of the food items. Surprisingly, about 700 persons were fed and still the food items were available for some more persons. Rajmatha and everyone in the kitchen felt that every vessel containing a food item that day became an Akshoya Patro due to Swami's blessing.
An exquisitely carved beautiful piece of art depicting Krishna on flute in the tribhangi posture was brought to Brindavan for installation in the darshan hall. Baba called the Rajmatha to have a look at the idol. She was looking at the idol with admiration. Bhagawan asked her, "Rajmatha, how is this Krishna? He is very beautiful - isn't it so?" The Rajmatha looked at Baba with adoration and said, "None can be as beautiful as my Kanhaiya!" Baba with a bewitching smile asked the principal of the college, who was there, "Do you know who her Kanhaiya is?" The principal did not know the answer and Baba proudly pointed to Himself and nodded His majestic Head.
Baba visited "Devi Nivas" on 26th September, the last birthday of the Rajmatha and started singing "Happy birthday to you, Rajmatha!" The Rajmatha walked up to Baba and prayed to Him, "Swami, I ask You today for a birthday gift. You should grant it without fail" "What is it? Tell Me" asked Baba. "First, You should promise that You will grant it, and then I will tell You what it is" After some haggling, Swami yielded, "Alright, here is My promise to grant you whatever you want. Now tell Me." The Rajmatha asked "Bhagawan, Grant me death." Baba placed His hands on her head for five minutes. Later, the Rajmatha told her daughter, "Swami is God! He showed me in these five minutes all that I wanted to see!" From that day, the Rajmatha went on giving detailed instructions to her family members in all the matters as to what was to be done after her departure from the world. Six days later she breathed her last in the early hours of the morning, listening to the bhajans sung by her Lord from a tape-recorder. Bhagawan came to 'Devi Nivas' at sunrise and looking at the body of His dear devotee Bhagawan said, "Who will dojagada (arguments) with Me henceforth?" Bhagawan had given that sort of liberty to her to differ and even argue with Him. Perhaps, she was one and the only of her kind among His countless devotees!
