The Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Centre, Embassy of India, Moscow, organized a lecture by the eminent Indian Sanskrit scholar, Prof. Bhagirath Prasad Tripathi, also known as “Vagish Shastri”, at D P Dhar Hall of the Embassy of India, Moscow, on “Sanskrit: Influence of Vedic Philosophy on Western Culture”. The eveningbegan with HE Mr. Ajai Malhotra, Ambassador of India to the Russian Federation, highlighting the role of the Embassy of India and its Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Centre in promoting cultural as well as academic cooperation with institutions across Russia. Ambassador Malhotra referred to the modest financial grant provided to Russian institutions for projects relating to Indian studies. He also highlighted the growing interest of Russians in various aspects of Indian culture, including Indian languages, dance, music, yoga, and ayurveda. He conveyed his gratitude to Prof. Tripathi for delivering his lecture at the Embassy of India, Moscow, and to Ms. Elena Mostovaya for initiating and organizing it. In his lecture, Prof. Tripathi dwelt upon various features of the Vedas and Upanishads. He also explained the essence of various shlokas and mantras contained in ancient Indian texts. He candidly mentioned that learning Sanskrit needed many years of study, though scholars have made efforts to make Sanskrit learning simpler. Dr. Sergei Lobanov, a scholar from the Institute of Philosophy, Russian Academy of Sciences, translated the lecture of Prof. Tripathi, which was attended by prominent Russian scholars such as Prof. Sergei Serebriani, Prof. Alexander Stoylarov, Dr. Ludmila Khokhlova, Dr. Indira Gazieva, and Dr. Guzel Strelkova. Prof. Tripathi and Ambassador Malhotra responded to questions from the audience. The evening concluded with an Indian Tea Reception.
